In general my advice is don't worry about trends. It is your home, do what you like regardless of what's popular or trending.
What is some sound design advice you share when creating a:
Family room
Is the TV the main use of the room? If so, be sure to orient the sofa/sectional accordingly.
Dining room
Make sure you have 3 feet of clearance around the dining table so you can move the chair.
Master bedroom
Simple and serene is the way.
Kid's room
Storage!! Peices that not only function but add extra storage.

Designer Tips
What is some sound design advice you share when creating a:
Family Room
Comfort is key, if possible, separate area for games or extra seating. Sofa table with stools for study or entry areas.
Dining Room
Use bold color or a mural wall paper in what is usually a boring area. Print fabric on the backs of the chairs.
Master Bedroom
Think Serenity, refuge, sanctuary. Fluffy down comforter, textures in pillows and rugs.
Kids rooms
Cozy refuge. Paint the ceiling a color, wall paper, make a fabric tent or canopy over the bed.
Kitchen Set
Textures, woven backs on chairs with metal legs, or woven leather seats to offset the coldness of the metal appliances. Add Interesting lighting too.
Home Office
Not only having it set up for working efficiently, but add comfortable chairs to read and/or relax.
Living Room
Mix it up and add something eclectic like traditional tastes, add a contemporary painting over an antique chest.

What is some sound design advice you share when creating a:
Family Room
Look at and take inventory of how your family uses your family room. It might be better to have more spots to lay down and you can add reclining seats or a chaise if you use it conversationally. I would love to help you navigate all the possible options.
Kids Room
Storage beds + Bright painted wood colors are great solutions to kids rooms!
Kitchen Set
Canadel is a great furniture line for a kitchen or breakfast room. Have white Cabinets? Bring that color into the breakfast area with complimentary 2-toned options on the table bases.

To get the best comfort, know how you use the room. Try it like you use it.
Dining Room
Allow enough space! Don't overcrowd.
Master Bedroom
Don't be afraid to be eclectic. Everything doesn't need to match.
Kids room
Have Fun! Use Color. Make it a space they want to be in.
Kitchen Set
Go for oak - not for broke. It's beautiful, timeless and tough!
Home Office
Maximize your storage capacity. You WILL need it.
Living Room (not for entertainment)
If it is just a pass by... dress it up!
It only has 30 seconds to shine BUT make it budget friendly.
